APL is dedicated to developing novel optical sensing devices and systems to investigate unique optical properties from light interaction with micro/nanoscale materials in the areas of optoelectronics, integrated optics, and biophotonics.

The current research projects include the development of ultra-high sensitive guided-wave optical sensors for bio-sensing, development of novel Gamma camera for nuclear medical imaging, development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for functional imaging, and development of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for single molecule detection.
